Concept of Exaltation & Debilitation Stretched

My Profile:

My name is Pulkit Gupta, I have done Btech in Chemical Engg. and than went onto do Masters in Fashion Management from NIFT, Delhi. My profession is in retail of ethnic wear (i.e. suits and sarees). I have had an avid interest in astrology for the last 7-8 yrs. I am a self-taught astro student. I have been compelled to write this article to contribute in my own little way to the field of  Vedic astrology.

First I would like to begin with the basics, which is the very root of astrology and that needs to be emphasized.

  1. Classification of Signs
  2. Male and Female

1 3 5 7 9 11 all odd
Female 2 4 6 8 10 12 all even
  1. Nature

1 5 9

2 6 10
Air 3 7

water 4 8

  1. Movement

1 4 7 10

2 5 8

Mutable 3 6 9

These concepts will really help when we get deeply into predictions, for example: If you have a fixed sign in your 10th house, you are more likely to have a fixed routine in your job .

  2. Male and female

Note :  Rahu, Ketu are shadow planets or merely points, so their results are based on the signs in which they are placed. (Although some consider Rahu to be like Saturn, and Ketu to be like Mangal)

It’s very important to unedrstand these classifications. Although there are some considerations.  For example: Suppose Jupiter is in 5th house and in an even sign—it will give more daughters, even though Jupiter is a male planet. But the effects of the rashi would also come into play.

This classification also helps in reccomending remedies. For istance, if  Jupiter is causing you a Pitta (fire) desorder, than the Moon is used (by drinking water in a silver glass), because only water can supress fire . Here if you try to use Saturn (like increasing intake of mustard oil in cooking), air will give fire more flames, thus the illness might worsen.

  1. Fundamental Rules table

I will like to introduce to you a table, which will be the basis of giving predicitions. The chart is based on the rule that if a planet is debilitated in a particular sign, it will be in “fall” in all the other signs of the same nature. For example: We all know that Jupiter is debilitated in Capricorn, an earth sign. Thus it will be in fall in other two earth signs: i.e. Taurus and Virgo.

Similarly if Saturn in exalted in the 7th sign (Libra, Air), thus it will be in “rise” in Gemini and Aquarius.

Planet Rise Fall
Sun 1,5,9 3,7,11
Saturn 3,7,11 1,5,9
Jupiter 4,8,12 2,6,10
Mars 2,6,10 4,8,12
venus 4,8,12 2,6,10

This is based on the fact that Saturn being an airy planet likes to remain in airy signs, but it goes into fall in fire signs, i.e. Aries, Leo, Sagittarius.

From the table, animosity between the planets can easily be seen.  For example: Sun and Saturn are inimical and it can be observed they are in rise in exactly opposite signs.

Note:   Here you could argue:

i.. Moon should be in fall in Cancer.

  1. Rahu, Ketu not given.

iii. Mercury not mentioned.

  1. Mars in fall in Scorpio.

The answers to these are as follows:

  1. Some people seem to behave like lunatics when the Moon is in Cancer—this is a point for which I have no answer. Although people will bring in aspects, 4th house role etc. But as an astrology student, I will like to stick to a basic point to facilitate learning (rather than complicating it).

Some of you after going through the article and subsequent research may enlighten me. The only answer in my mind is that the Moon has no light of its own and only radiates light from the Sun. It loses strength when it is alone.

  1. Rahu and Ketu are shadowy planets or merely points generated by astrological calculations. Thus no significance with respect to rise and fall. You can stick to traditional wisdom that Rahu is exalted in Taurus and Ketu in Scorpio.
  • In the case of Mercury, please stick to the point that it is exalted in Virgo. I have observed predictions for Mercury to be most tricky, be it Virgo or Gemini lagna. Here I have stuck to the Lal Kitab analogy that Vedic astrologers fear Saturn and Rahu the most. But we fear Mercury the most, since it’s Buddhi (to mention Lal Kitab) I know that certain groups of astrologers will start thinking of my article as “off”, but I have found it to be applicable. Thus I have not stretched the concept of the rise and fall to include M
  1. Mars in Scorpio gives uncontrolled agression. It’s like a bullet waiting for a trigger that can go off

Now coming to the practical applicability of these concepts, I will begin with some examples.  (Here the yardstick will be kept simple and deeper concepts would not be mixed so as to facilitate impromptu learning).

Although, I would like to mention some concepts that might not be applied right now

For example:

  1. If the Sun is in rise in the 1st sign, but is aspected by Saturn, it will alternate the effect. That is, the Sun will behave as if it were in fall.
  2. If the lord of the 6th, 8th and 12th house goes into the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th house and is rising, it will alternate the effect and behave as if it were in fall .
  3. If the lord of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 7th, 9th, 10th or 11th house goes into the 6th, 8th & 12th house and is rising, it will alternate the effect and behave as if it were in fall.

Any planet in fall gives rise to the non living things for that house, but fall for the living things for the house. For example: If Saturn is in fall in the 4th house, it will give a good house, car, etc., but bad relationship with the mother or emotional problems.

Example 1. : Aamir Khan

Indian film actor, director, screenwriter, producer and television presenter. Through his successful career in Hindi films, Khan has established himself as one of the most popular and influential actors of the Indian cinema. He is the recipient of numerous awards and nominations, including four National Film Awards and seven Filmfare Awards, and was honoured by the Government of India with the Padma Shri in 2003 and the Padma Bhushan in 2010.

Here, as discussed, Jupiter is in fall in the 3rd house, thus having a weak aspect on the 7th house. Thus Aamir had to divorce his first wife. Moreover, since it’s in fall in the 3rd house, it denotes  a weaker sibling. His brother Faisal Khan did not have much success and faced emotional problems, too.

Moreover, V, thus he chose arts, drama and movie making and excelled.

Example 2:  MK Gandhi

Indian lawyer and civil rights champion, the spiritual and political leader of India through her tempestuous birth of independence. Known as Mahatma, (great soul), he began the freedom movement in 1919 with nonviolent disobedience. India broke from England in August 1947 and Gandhi’s rank as a saint and holy man was assured in history. During the ensuing Hindu-Moslem riots, Gandhi was assassinated by a Hindu gunman, Nathuram Godse, on 1/30/1948

Here Mars is in fall, thus effecting its lordship i.e.  1st sign or the 7th house. He took a vow of celibacy in his mid-30s and had a celibate marriage.

Jupiter is in fall in the 8th house, thus a sudden end to life by gunshot.

Example 3: Allaire, Jacques

Responsible for the French homicide; killed his own son and grandson 7/27/1987; Revin, France.

Here the Moon is in fall although it’s in Cancer. Thus he committed the henious crime and killed his own family. Though there is a conjunction of Rahu and Saturn, the Moon being in Cancer, could not give any positive insight to this man. And the positive effects of Jupiter couldn’t help control his perverted mindset

Example 4.  Natural fire events

American explosion at a Massachusetts Electric company substation that knocked out electrical service in a Boston suburb and injured three maintenance workers. The three were inside the Glendale substation when a fire and explosion occurred; all are in intensive care. One died the following day. Over 3,000 people were left without utility power and the Red Cross set up assistance stations.

American nightclub fire that killed 492 people and severely injured nearly two hundred others. On the night of the fire, the club was filled with over 1000 people, over capacity. When fire broke out, possibly due to a lit match used by an employee changing a light bulb. Within 15 minutes, the entire scene was engulfed in flames. The decorations were highly flammable and the two main doors, against which the panicked dancers and diners pushed to try to escape, were revolving doors that turned inward.

Mars being in fall couldn’t help save the incidents.

  1. Time synchronization: An astrologer, to give good guidance, must be able to exactly pinpoint the timing of events. For this he/she must tally the past event dates and do adjustments according to them. For this I would like to put forward some rules:
  2. Exchange

Let us take two planets, let’s call them X and Y. If planet X is in the sign of Y and Y is in the sign of X, than while synchronizing X and Y can replace one another.

  1. Aspect Exchange

Let us take two planets, say X and Y. If planet X aspects the sign of Y and Y aspects sign of  X, than while synchronizing, X & Y can replace one another.

  1. Planet in another planet’s Nakshatra.

Suppose X is in the Nakshatra of Y, then X can replace Y, but Y cannot replace X.

  1. Planet in another planet’s sign.

Suppose X is in the sign of Y, X can replace Y, but Y cannot replace X.

  1. Rahu and Ketu

They are shadowy planets, so they give results on the basis of the lords of the signs in which they are placed.

  1. Synchronization

Suppose a person’s marriage took place in the 1st lord or 7th lord or 12th lord antardasha.

For example: Gemini

Mercury – Jupiter – Venus, which is to start on the 1st of December, 2010, but he got married on  November 14th, 2010. That equals a time difference of 15 days.

And if he has come to you for a question about child birth,  the dasha that you reach is the 1st lord – 9th lord – 5th lord i.e. Mercury-Saturn-Venus than you can use this 15-day difference adjustment to exactly pin point the birth of child.

  1. Combinations
Event Combination of house lordships
repeating till 3rd level
Marriage 1st, 7th & 12th
Economic Gain 2nd & 9th
Foreign tour 4th & 12th
Child Birth 1st, 5th & 9th
Purchase of vehicle or house 4th & 2nd
Illness 6th & 12th
Accident 8th & 6th

  1. These combinations are seen from the ascendant in 80% of cases. The remaining 20%  are seen from the Moon ascendant.
  2. Moreover the combination mentioned is for the 1st marriage, for subsequent marriages this combination can repeat also at 4th and 5th
  • 3rd lord can also be seen for short term travels.
  1. Which dasha to follow ??

The dasha that is mostly applied is Vishmottari Dasha, but since its division of periods is also the longest, sometimes it becomes difficult to exactly pinpoint the event date. Thus Yogini dasha should be used to reach to the exact time.

Although transits help in pin-pointing the event. For learning purposes, transits should be observed only last.
