Decisive Factors in Horoscope Prediction PART -1 Basic Philosophy

(SA so far has published two articles of Shri. Va. Da. Bhat in previous issues (translated articles in English from his popular marathi book ‘Ase Graha- Ashya Rashi’). Bhat sir has an independent methodology of chart analysis based on marathi paramparik jyotish. Previous articles were more of the ‘application of principles’ style, while these two articles[1] aim towards the philosophy as set and used by Bhat sir. It’s a result of his extensive research as well as practical study of phalit-jyotisha (predictive astrology). He writes from the wealth of experience and illustrates using huge kundli data base with the style of one-to-one interaction with reader. Thus to retain this ‘gripping effect’, translation has also followed the same style.

It is meaningful to read these articles before reader study his articles like Mars in Virgo[2], Venus in Aries[3], Mercury in Scorpio[4] etc. These two articles answer the question that, why he has chose to write on specific planets and their placements in particular signs)

Kundli (an astrological chart) which is used for predicting future is the great toy or a game from the perspective of human intellect. Infinite combinations of planets can exist in this chart. Certain combinations (of planets) can only be experienced during the course of 60-70 years. An astrologer in 21st century can actually understand and study the combination (yoga) of Saturn, Uranus and Neptune through practical experience. Such an occurrence, one could not be found or studied in astrological books of 18th century.

Thinking on this line, while using numerous (set) laws or principles in predictive astrology one should always consider the uniqueness and independent nature of every chart. It’s not always guaranteed that, while predicting (from the chart) astrologer will always come across the same set of experiences/results even though he has used similar theories or principle. If we conclude the reason of pre-mature death in certain chart as the presence of 8L in 1H, in the next chart native is blessed with long life in-spite of similar combination. This means that, mere 8L’s presence in 1H is not the only condition that should be considered (for longevity). In short, routine experiences and guesses are not of much use in the science of astrology. If this would have been the case, predictive astrology would have become very easy to master. Predictive astrology is a very complicated affair. Persons with average intelligence can progress only up to a certain level. If we look at history of astrology, it becomes very clear that repetitive articles have been written and lectures are delivered on routine topics by respective authors and speakers. However, most of them are not remembered due to lack (flavour) of brainpower and the experience in their literature.

How a particular planet will furnish its results are given in scriptures by virtue of their placement in houses, rashis, house lord’s characteristics or their combinations. Such results get expressed in different manner and colours (in any chart). Although human life is similar from one aspect, every individual’s world, his emotions etc are altogether distinct. Even though charts look primarily same with similar planetary positions and combinations, it’s not sure that everyone will get exactly same effects.  This is because every chart (kundli) stands distinct from other in one of the aspects. Kundli is an extremely sensitive device. Superficially similar appearing charts may have a minute disparity, which may completely change the course of effect / result.

Each and every chart has a peculiarity which can be termed as ‘decisive factor’. This crucial factor decides the ultimate direction of the result. Real skill of astrologer lies in speculating this factor. There are certain points that must get noted by the brain, while we read / analyse any chart. Further discussion and analysis is based on this fact.

The function of decisive factor in the chart is equivalent to the last weight that to be added in weighing balance. While measuring weight of any object (with weighing balance), we quickly add few weights. Results of planets as per their placement (in houses) and from house lord perspective are same. But while we are about to reach the balance, even a tiny weight can disturb it. On the similar lines, decisive factor which means a particular planetary combination (in the chart) decides the final direction of the future (of native).

Let me explain this point with an illustrative example.  Chart no. 1 is of Oct-Nov 1934. Native’s first wife got expired and he got married for second time.

chart 250

In this chart, Saturn is in 7H along with Rahu. In 2H (of family) Mars is present along with Neptune. As Mars is placed in 8th house from 7H, ‘dwi- bharya yoga’ (combination for having two wives) has formed.

In all books it’s been given that, in following situations ‘dwi- bharya yoga’ exists:

  • If there are two malefic planets present in 7H.
  • If Saturn is in 7H along with malefic planet.
  • If malefic planet / mars is in 2H.

In this chart, if you think with above points and conclude then its wrong. For this refer to the ephemeris of Oct- Nov 1934. Planetary positions of 10 out of 12 planets are same. Even Mercury is also in Libra. Now in this period of 2 months, millions of people would have born. Everyone will have those 10 planets in same rashis and in same houses. Then is it correct if we tell every person a ‘dwi- bharya yoga’?

Let us begin the study of the ‘decisive factor’ in the chart from this juncture.

Now please refer to chart no. 2, 3 and 4. In these charts, one native got divorced, other got married second time and third native’s married life is normal as of now.

After analysing these charts, we can conclude that astrological principles are correct. Sharp skills and detail study is required while applying them in practice. Placement of Mars-Neptune in 2H, presence of retrograded 7HL in 8H or 8HL in 7H, or aspect of Mars on 7HL etc are correct as principles. These are the charts of the natives born on 5th Oct, 15th Oct and 1st Nov.’1936. We cannot do a specific diagnosis as per the position of Saturn, Jupiter, Uranus, Mars and Rahu.

Now refer to chart no.2, where Venus is 14° and Uranus (of 15°) is retrograde. They are placed in opposite houses. If you can notice this combination, then you can identify the correct chart (of divorce). And then you will come to know, how the combination of Venus opposite Uranus becomes responsible for divorce. Now see the chart no.4. Venus is in Scorpio. Also, Venus has the 4th aspect of Mars as well as the 10th aspect of Saturn. This illustrates how malefic aspect on Venus creates hassles in the married life. Similarly, one can estimate the supportive role of Venus when placed in its own sign (Libra) for married life from chart no.3.

Identification of the crucial (decisive) factor in the chart is only possible with scientific study and analysis. Sometimes it may be Moon or in some other chart it would be Venus or Mercury. Decisive point for each of the incident could be different. This issue is discussed in following paragraphs, though one should perfectly understand the Karakatva of planets to grasp it.

For example, in the discussion of Education few astrologers consider planets in 5H, 5HL, Jupiter and aspects of planets on 5H. Recently[1] the planetary position was like this; Saturn in Scorpio, Jupiter along with Rahu in Pisces. Now, thousands of naives born with Cancer as ascendants will have Scorpio Saturn in 5H and Jupiter –Rahu of Pisces will be in 9H (Bhagya Sthana). In some of the charts, Mars in Gemini i.e. 5HL will be placed in 12H that too in enemy sign. Now, who is brainy and who is dumb! Here, you are forgotten to consider the karakatva of Mercury, right. Mercury is the karaka of buddhi (intellect) etc is shuldn’t be considered as the bookish knowledge but to be used and experienced in practice. Most of the times, problems related to education can be solved by considering Mercury. In short, in such situation Mercury, its position in sign and other (related) conditions becomes the ‘decisive factor’.

While deciding the decisive factor in the chart, karaka planet’s study becomes important to analyse certain matters. Now lets go back to chart no.1. Let’s consider three options[2] (chart 5, 6 and 7) with respect to it.

[1] When this article was written

[2] Chart no.1 has been slightly modified for minute study and given as three different cases (chart no.5, 6 and 7).

chart 252

By keeping the positions of planets constant as in chart 1 (Saturn + Rahu in 7H, Mars + Neptune in 2H, Jupiter in 4H, Uranus in 10H and Pluto + Ketu in 1H), consider Venus in Virgo (chart 5), Venus in Libra (chart 6) and Venus in Scorpio (chart 7). In given situations, we have to make our decision.

‘Dwi- Bharya yoga’ mostly exists, if Saturn + Rahu are present in 7H, Mars + Neptune in 2H and debilitated Venus in sign of Virgo.

But this statement doesn’t always holds true if Mercury and Jupiter are placed in Libra. This is because, there is an important rule regarding such placement. “One should estimate the strength of the sign lord in which the karaka planet (of the event or domain under consideration) is placed.” When Venus is placed in Virgo and Mercury in Libra, there will be a ‘Anynonya’ (exchange) yoga of them. Such exchange yoga of Venus-Mercury should be considered favourable. Moreover, if we study the combination of Mercury+ Jupiter in Libra and Venus in Virgo from karakatva point of view, native’s wife will be highly qualified, working in the field of Arts or Education. In addition to this, one should not neglect the planets placed in the signs of karaka planets. E.g. presence of Mercury +Jupiter in Libra or Mars+ Rahu in Libra or Saturn + Rahu in Libra etc can make big difference from the perspective of results (effects).

So, in the same chart (no.5) when Venus is in Virgo and Moon is placed in Cancer or Aquarius, then it (moon) must be considered. This is because, when moon is present in cancer (consider the moon chart or Chandra kundli), Saturn + Rahu will be placed in 7H and Mars will be in 2H (of family). When (moon) placed in Aquarius, Saturn + Rahu will come in 12H (from moon) and Mars + Neptune will then be placed in 7H. In such circumstances, the strong possibility ‘dwi- bharya yoga’ exists.

In the other case, keeping planetary positions same; consider Venus in Libra (chart no. 6). This will absolutely change the direction of result. ‘Dwi- bharya yoga’ will not exist at all in this case. But at the same time, one should pay attention towards the degreecal Kendra (trine) yoga of Venus (in Libra) and Saturn (in Capricorn) if present. Natives who have Venus (in Libra) opposite Uranus, they can suffer from the issues like divorce.

Presence of Venus in Scorpio (chart no. 7) with the same planetary position (as in previous cases) will change the picture dramatically. Venus is in the sign of Mars and in addition to this; it receives the aspect of Mars and Saturn. There will be a ground for wife’s health problems, ‘dwi- bharya yoga’ and astrologer will have to change the decision as per the (change in position of) Moon.

With the above discussion, the concept of ‘decisive factor’ might have been clear to certain extend. In my case, I have done many predictions only with principles of paramparik  phalajyotishya (traditional predictive astrology technique).

By mere consideration of the karaka planet and referring to other planetary considerations, it is important to conclude. This is a very important factor and discussed in subsequent article[1].  Let’s see one last example before I end this article.

(Refer to chart no. 8, DOB:  7 Sept 1945). Gentleman who presented me this chart asked about 7H. (As per chart, I predicted that) Native would have got married twice; second wife would have an accident / injury to hands, possibility of disability, and problems to first wife during child birth etc. Surprisingly all my guesses were correct. First wife was expired during second child birth and wife’s one of the hand is just half (disability to hand). In this case I just (significantly) considered Saturn, Mars and Rahu placed in 12 H from position of Venus. Even good forecast can be made by considering the mutual positions of planets from Venus or from the position of lord of sign in which the Venus is placed (Venus’s significator). Similar studies can be performed for every karaka planet.

(CE’s note: Following are the philosophical and most important paragraphs of the article. Thus, demands more attention of readers in order to make any conclusion)

If we think logically (one fact gets clear that) out of 12 planets; there are only few planets on which the independent existence of kundli is based. Independent existence means, the way every ‘jeeva’ (living being) experience some of the joys-sorrows in the life those are different from other than ‘jeeva’. This independent nature of chart chiefly depends on the ascendant sign and its degree. With reference to planets (in terms of contribution to ‘independent existence’ of chart), Neptune, Uranus, Saturn, Rahu, Jupiter doesn’t play a major role. This is because; they reside in one sign over a year or even more than that (one year). That’s why in the phase of a year, whoever (natives) gets born, they (planets) appear into the chart in same sign and houses.

For example, if in certain chart we conclude that, “as Jupiter is placed in 5H and Saturn in 9H forming Nava-Panchama yoga, attributing greatness, luck and potent nature to an individual”, it’s not an overstatement. Two of such great planets forming an auspicious yoga through auspicious houses will bear such fruits. But this yoga can also exist in charts of thousands of people born during that period even in roadside beggar’s charts.

This discussion surly summarises that, from the aspect of phalit (prediction of timing of event), effects produced by planets like Jupiter, Rahu, Saturn cannot signify independent nature or uniqueness of the chart. Even the power of planets beyond[1] Mars with reference to phalit (prediction) is not as great as we understand. It is just a hallucination or it has altogether a different meaning / interpretation.  ‘Saturn placed in Libra in 9H’ etc are the statement which sometimes misguide us. Misguiding facts like ‘big, powerful planets in trines-angular houses made a person great, famous, successful’ have been furnished by astrologers in the past. As per my research, I feel that planets which really decide the fate of chart (kundli) are Mars, Venus, Mercury, Moon. Only with the support of these planets, power of other (big) planets increases. These smaller planets, if not placed properly in the chart then chart does not get the thrust. From the viewpoint of pleasures-worries or success-failures in all domains of life, comprehensive study of Mars, Venus, Mercury, Sun, Moon is of utmost importance. Only by virtue of such a study (like planetary positions; house-wise and sign-wise, mutual planetary combinations etc), confidence for prediction can be raised. If astrologer doesn’t know about the way planets behave in particular situation, he cannot master the science completely.

In the nutshell, ‘decisive factor’ of the chart is one of from these (discussed) factors.
