The Bar and the Bench According to Jaimini by Iranganti Rangacharya

irangati rangacharta img

I shall attempt in this article to presage legal profession including judiciary from Jaimini astrological precepts. A few illustrated charts of lawyers and judicial officials will help verify their correctness.

Jaimini Theory
As most readers know, the Atmakaraka is the plan et who acquires the highest degree in a sign. The sign occupied by the Atmakaraka in Navamsa is called Atmakaraka Lagna. This is generally known as Karakamsa. The sign occupied by Atmakaraka in Rasi chart is called as Karaka Rasi. In Pada II of Adhyaya I of Jaimini Sutras, various results have been dealt with at length based on Karakamsa and the planetary placement in the different houses reckoned from Karakamsa absolutely without any reference to the planetary lordships.
From the aphorisms No. 102, 116, 117, we come to understand, based on the different commentaries, that the first five houses from Krakamsa are the houses signifying the education besides other general significations ascribed in any Indian system of Astrology. Aphorism No. 106 reveals that Jupiter is the versatile erudite. Hence he is the preceptor and the cousellor of the gods. He is the significator of Judgment (Matih) and hence he is deemed as the judiciary planet. Aphorism No. 110 reveals that Mercury is the planet of investigation (Meemamsa) and aphorism 111 reveals that Mars is the planet of law. Law study and legal profession can be judged by the three planets, viz. Mars, Jupiter and Mercury connected with any of the five houses of Karakamsa.

Principles of Judgment
      1. The 5th house of Karakamsa should be occupied or aspected by Mars, while Jupiter and Mercury are connected with any of the five houses of Karakamsa, by being well-placed or by aspecting their house of exaltation, own house of friend’s house.
      2. Karakamsa should be occupied by Mars, Mercury and Jupiter, while any one of these three is an Atmakaraka.
      3. If Mars becomes Atmakaraka, Karakamsa should be occupied or aspected by Jupiter while Mercury should be connected with any of the five houses from Karakamsa, by being well placed or by aspecting his house of exaltation or own house or friend’s house.
      4. If Mars becomes Atmakaraka, Karakamsa should be occupied or aspected by Mercury, while Jupiter is connected with any of the five houses of Karakamsa, by being well placed or by aspecting his house of exaltation, own house or friend’s house.
      5. Karakamsa should be occupied by Mars, while Mercury and Jupiter are connected with any of the five houses of Karakamsa by being well placed or by aspecting house of exaltation, own house or friend’s house.
      6. If all the three or any two of Mars, Jupiter and Mercury are exalted or in own house or in friend’s houses in Navamsa chart and connected with any of the above principles, the native occupies a high post in the judiciary.
      7. If the Sun becomes Atmakaraka and is well placed in Navamsa chart and any of the above principles (1, 5, 6) are fulfilled.
      8. If the Sun is exalted or in own house in Navamsa chart and connected with any of the above principles, elevation to a high judicial post is certain.
      9. Application of the above principles reckoning from Karaka Rasi if supplementary (gauna).

The Sun is Atmakaraka debilitated in Rasi chart and placed in neutral house in Navamsa. Only Jupiter is exalted while Mars is in neutral house and Mercury is in inimical house. Hence there are indications for his judiciary post late in life. But nothing of that sort was recorded till 1927 (year of my father’s death) in my father’s book of horoscopes.

Atmakaraka is Mars and Karakamsa is occupied by Jupiter. Mercury aspects the 3rd house of Karakamsa while the 3rd house Leo is occupied by its own lord, Sun. Jupiter from Karakamsa is aspecting his own two houses. Thus there are chances of his judiciary post. That he becomes a Nyaya-dhikari and Lakshadhikari is found recorded in my father’s book. See the principles 3 & 8.

The native of Chart 5 was a pleader in Munsiff Court. The 5th house of Karakamsa is occupied by Mars, while Mercury placed in his own house, Gemini, aspects the 3rd house of Karakamsa, and Jupiter is placed in the 4th house of Karakamsa (principle-1). Mars is in the inimical sign, while Jupiter is debilitated. Hence there are no chances of the judiciary post. Note that the Sun also is not well-placed.

The 5th of Karakamsa is aspected by Mars, while the 3rd house of Karakamsa is aspected by Jupiter and Mercury (principle 1). The Sun is an Atmakaraka in Varttamamsa, Mars is in his own house, Scorpio; while Jupiter is exalted in Cancer. Mars, Jupiter and Mercury are connected by mutual aspects The native became a Judge in the High Court, Madras. My father recorded his prediction of the native’s elevation to Bench much earlier. I do not know whether he based his predictions on Jaimini. But is is clear from Parasara principle also that Mars, Jupiter, Venus and Moon are mutually placed in 3rd and 11th houses in Rasi chart. This is an unfailing Parasara principle for a high judiciary post. Besides the judiciary planet, Jupiter is placed well in the 5th of Lagna.
Chart 7: Parshi Srinivasa Rao, B.A.,B.L.
♠ Rasi: Aries – Ascendant, Mercury and Venus; Taurus – the Sun; Gemini – Ketu; Cancer – Mars; Libra – Jupiter and the Moon; Scorpio – Saturn; and Sagittarius – Rahu.       Atmakaraka is Saturn, Karakamsa is Pisces. The 5th house of Karakamsa is aspected by Mars and Jupiter, while Mercury aspects the 3rd house of Karakamsa (principle 1). The above charts from 1 to 7 are taken from the scattered papers of my father’s book of horoscopes.
      Chart 8: I.V.Rangacharya, B.A.,LL.B.
♠ Date of birth: 20-7-1912, 5.35 a.m. A.K.= the Moon, Karakamsa = Gemini. Rasi: Cancer – Ascendant, the Sun and Venus; Leo – Mercury and Mars; Virgo – the Moon and Ketu; Scorpio – Jupiter; Pisces – Rahu; and Taurus – Saturn. Navamsa: Aries – Mercury; Gemini – the Moon and Mars; Leo – the Sun and Ketu; Virgo – Venus; Libra – Jupiter; Aquarius – Rahu; and Pisces – Saturn.
The native of the chart 8 is an advocate practicing in the High Court, Hyderabad. Many astrologers gave him good hopes of his elevation to Bench. He too cherished the same hope, himself being acquainted with Astrology. They depended on Parasara principle that Venus, the Moon and Jupiter are mutually placed in the 3rd and 11th houses, while Jupiter is well- placed in the 5th house of Lagna. They have overlooked Saturn’s aspect to Jupiter. I found that the 5th house of Karakamsa is not connected with Mars while judiciary planet, Jupiter, is placed in the inimical sign, the 5th of Karakamsa. Since I have more faith in Jaimini, for which I may be excused, I expressed my doubt about their prediction. Note that all the three connected planets, Mars, Jupiter and Mercury are in the inimical signs in Navamsa chart. For his legal profession note the following principle. Karakamsa is occupied by Jupiter. Both Jupiter and Mercury aspect the 3rd house of Karakamsa. (principle 5).
Chart 9: U P Singh (chart from AM November 1987 written by Mr. K N Rao)
♠ Rasi: Gemini – Ascendant; Leo – Ketu; Virgo – the Moon and Jupiter; Libra – the Sun; Scorpio – Mercury; Sagittarius – Mars and Venus; Capricorn – Saturn; and Aquarius – Rahu. Navamsa: Aries – Ketu; Taurus – Mars; Gemini – the Sun, the Moon and Saturn; Cancer – Jupiter; Leo – Venus; Virgo – Mercury; and Libra – Rahu.
Atmakaraka is the Sun. Karakamsa is Gemini. The 5th of Karakamsa is aspected by Mars while Jupiter is exalted in the 2nd house of Karakamsa, and Mercury is exalted in the 4th house (principles 1, 6, 7).
Mr U P Singh was elevated to Bench as precisely predicted by Mr K N Rao. The inordinate delay for his elevation my be due to the debilitated Sun in Rasi chart.
