CHAPTER 7

The sage said: O Dwija! Now I shall speak about the Vishwabala of the vargas by the mere knowledge of which the results can be ascertained.

Jupiter, Sun and Mars give results in the Hora of Sun. Moon, Venus and Saturn give results in the Hora of Moon. Mercury gives results in both. In even signs the Hora of Moon (is powerful). In other signs the Hora of Sun (is powerful). The result is full in the beginning of the own Hora and nil in the end. In between the strength should be calculated proportionately. One should consider the results everywhere in the same fashion – in Dreshkana also.

Strengths should be calculated in Turyamsha and Saptamamsha and other amshas just like they have been calculated in the case of planets.

In Trimshamsha Sun gives the results of Mars and Moon gives the results of Venus. In Trimshamsha after considering this, strengths should be derived just like they have been calculated for planets.

After considering the gross strengths, subtle strengths should be ascertained. Lagna, Hora, Dreshkana, Navamsha, Suryamsha, Trimshamsha – these are the Shadvargas. Their Vishwaka strengths are respectively five, two, four, five, two and one. In Saptavargas including the Saptamsha the Vishwaka strengths are five, two, three, two and a half, four and a half, two and one.

Including Dashamamsha, Shodashamsha and Shashtyamsha we get the Dashavargas. Their Vishwaka strengths are three for Kshetra, five for Shashtyamsha and one and a half for the rest.

Now I shall specially speak in sequence about the Vishwaka strengths each of the Shodashavargas which are accepted by me. One for Hora, one for Dashamamsha, one for Dreshkana, two for Shodashamsha, three for Navamsha, three and a half for Kshetra, four for Shashtyamsha and half for the rest. These are the strengths devised by me.

The full Vishwaka strength is twenty. It becomes eighteen in Adhimitra houses, fifteen in Mitra houses, ten in Sama houses, seven in Shatru houses and five in Adhishatru houses.

Take the product of the Vishwaka strength of the varga with the Vishwaka strength of the planet and divide by twenty. The result obtained should be used to ascertain results of the planets. If it is less than five then no results, above that less results, above ten medium results, above fifteen auspicious results. This is how all the planets should be judged.

O Saumateya! Now I shall tell you something else as well. Listen. A planet give full results when placed seventh to Sun. When it is placed with the Sun then one should know nil results. In between these Udayasta Vishopaka strengths should be computed proportionately.

O the best of Dwijas! One should know the results of Udayasta Vishopaka strengths to be as important as those of Varga Vishwa strengths. After knowing both the strengths one should announce the results.

First consider the Varga Vishwaka strengths and then the Udayasta strengths. As long as the dasha of the planet is running, if both strengths are full then full results shall be obtained, if both are nil then nil results, if very low and low then low results, if medium and medium then medium results. One should always judge in this way. In other cases the knowledgable ones should know the results on the basis of the former and latter (that is on the basis of both the Varga Vishwaka strength and the Udayasta strength).

O fortunate one! Now listen to the means of computation of Gulika. For days beginning with Sunday, in the sequence twenty six, twenty two, eighteen, fourteen, ten, six and two, multiply these by the duration of the day and divide by thirty. The Dhruvakas begin from the lord of the day itself. During the night multiply (these numbers) by the duration of night. The Dhruvakas begin from the (lord of the) fifth (day). The ascendant at the time obtained thus shall be the Gulika.

The correction for the lagna should be done from the Gulika if the ascendant is strong, from the Moon if the Moon lagna is strong and from the Gulika if both are of equal strengths. If both are devoid of strengths then also (the correction should be done) from the Gulika.

The birth ascendant should be indicated to be that house itself or the house seventh to it or a house in a trine to it. For humans and animal the ascendant can also be in the second or tenth to it. For birds it can be in the third, seventh or eleventh to it. For insects, serpents and aquatic animals the ascendant shall be in the remaining houses. For human beings and others the ascendant can be in a trine or also in the Pranapada.

Convert the time past sunrise into palas and divide by fifteen. Add it in terms of sign, degrees etc to that sign (occupied by Sun), to the ninth sign (ninth to the one occupied by Sun) or to the fifth sign (fifth to the one occupied by Sun) depending upon whether Sun is in a movable sign, fixed sign or dual sign. The resulting sign shall be the Pranapada. Use it to correct the ascendant as previously described. If the ascendant is not corrected through the Pranapada, Gulika or the Moon then it should be known to be incorrect. For non-movable beings (like trees etc) the lagna should be corrected in the same way.

After correcting the ascendant one should correct the Nisheka lagna. O Saumateya! I shall tell that. Listen.

The time of Nisheka of all beings can be known from the birth ascendant. The difference between the house where Saturn is placed and where Gulika is placed should be added to the difference between the ascendant and the ninth house. The sign (degrees etc) which is thus obtained should be known to be the month (days etc) elapsed between nisheka and birth. If the lord of the ascendant is in the invisible half then add the portion traversed by the moon in its sign and derive the Nisheka lagna. Then correct the birth ascendant as described previously.

From the Nisheka lagna good and bad results can be predicted especially for the native in the womb. One can also predict the good and evil effects for the parents as well as about their life and death. All this should be properly known from the Nisheka lagna using one’s understanding.

Misfortunes during childhood should be especially derived from the birth ascendant. Such misfortunes are considered upto the age of twenty four. They should be carefully studied by the wise men in the beginning and after that all kinds of good or evil results, longevity etc should be pronounced. In such misfortunes the native meets his death even though he has his life remaining, just like a lamp which is filled with oil but gets extinguished by a strong wind.

Misfortunes of men are of two types – one caused by fate and the other caused by one’s own deeds. Mistortunes cause by one’s deeds can happen anytime through poison, weapons, fire etc. Just like a lamp struck by itself is extinguished immediately even if it is filled with oil and there is no strong wind, similarly a man’s life can end because of his own deeds. The lamp of life is similarly spoken to be of two kinds by Brahma. Such misfortunes can be known through special conjunctions of planets or through other kinds of conjunctions. In this way the death of native in this world can happen in four ways (at time or before time and in both cases because of fate or because of one’s own deeds).

If Moon is conjunct with Gulika in a trine then the age of that native definitely increases through the practice of Yoga etc.

If Gulika is placed in the twelfth, sixth or eighth house together with cruel planets then the native dies because of his own deeds.

If Moon is strong in the ascendant or is conjunct with the lord of the ascendant then the native has the blessings of fate. For the rest, fate is adverse and causes misfortunes. For these natives the duration (of life) is indicated by planets, signs etc.

Shiva said: After hearing these words of Lomasha, the best of the dwijas and the omniscient one (Saumateya) spoke thus to the king amongst sages, the ocean of mercy.

“Speak about the the age of the beings which is determined according to karma and time. Speak separately about their full age, years etc.”

||Thus ends the seventh chapter in the first part of Lomasha Samhita of sixty thousand verses.||
